According to ESPN, Alonzo Mourning has decided to stay with the Miami Heat 1 more year before retiring. It ended about 3 months of what can only be described as sweat inducing suspense for Heat fans. Besides the blistering temperatures outside, fans, players and the team were nervously awaiting a decision from Zo. The indecision itself had become a story in the South Florida sports market. But, at last we have the news! Mourning will play for 1 more year and then retire… probably.
The Decision Was Made Weeks Ago
Well, here is the kicker for this whole story. Apparently, Mourning had made his decision weeks ago. Even though, we can’t be sure about what Pat Riley will do, it seems that he must be leaning towards staying, because Zo has been saying that his decision will hinge on Riley’s return. So Alonzo will stay, therefore Riley will… Actually, I won’t jinx it, but you get the point. As for his return, it seems that Mourning couldn’t let himself retire after the way the team got swept in the playoffs by the Bulls:
“I want to redeem myself and try to help this team redeem ourselves as an organization and try to get back on track,” Mourning said. “That wasn’t the Miami team you saw in the playoffs last year. … I was embarrassed. I was truly embarrassed by that outcome. I know for a fact we’re a better team. It left a sour taste in my mouth and it’s time to really end it all on the right note.”
All I have to say is that it is about damn time we had some good news this offseason!
